In Hudson, Michigan, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Whether a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, they are experts in hair analysis, with testing centers available nationwide. hair or body hair (1.5 to 2 inches) is typically required for testing. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a method for drug detection. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are preferring it to traditional urine tests. Hair tests appeal to organizations with strict drug policies, courts, and those on probation due to its extensive detection period of up to 90 days, its secure collection process, and difficulty to manipulate. Yet, for recent drug use within 5 days, the urine test remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for detecting substance use, including drugs and alcohol. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance exposure by holding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can indicate substance presence over a period of up to three months. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch section of about 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or those beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen measurement. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair is an alternative. When mentioning head hair, we mean only scalp hair, while body hair includes all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Key stages in laboratory drug testing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary process of entering a sample into a lab’s records. This step verifies proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and fulfills any supplementary data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening entails an initial quick assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to negate drug usage for most samples, a positive result requires validation to be court-admissible. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening mandate additional confirmation.

For samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted and prepared for Extraction. This step involves obtaining drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral fluid), highlighting the challenge of hair drug screening.

Any positive Screening outcomes are validated through techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Necessary washing of presumptive positive samples is performed before confirmation. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter timeframe of urine tests.
  • Resistance to tampering: It is extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It reveals a pattern of substance use over an extended period rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to spot recent use: Detection in hair typically takes about 5-7 days post substance intake.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair strand, not the scalp's hair follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
