Accredited Drug Testing provides extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lake Isabella, Michigan. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing. We have testing facilities nationwide that can administer hair tests. Typically, hair from the crown or other body hair measuring 1.5 to 2 inches may be used. Hair tests can be checked for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing choices.

Over the last few years, drug testing methods have progressively incorporated hair follicle drug tests. More employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation often utilize hair tests. A major advantage of hair follicle drug tests is the extended drug detection window, typically up to 90 days, with supervised sample collection making it practically foolproof. However, for drug use detection within the past 5 days, urine testing remains the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is gaining recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows, offering a comprehensive history of drug and alcohol use. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use over a period of up to three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, and it is relatively resistant to tampering and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches in length and containing approximately 200 hair strands (comparable in diameter to a #2 pencil) can provide 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional analyses, or tests exceeding ten panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. We advise weighing the hair sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair, while body hair pertains to all other types such as facial and underarm hair.

Process Overview

Drug test results are processed through four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the step where a sample is initially entered into a lab's records. This phase involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing data that is not provided by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening consists of a preliminary assessment to check for substance abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient approach for ruling out drug use in most samples, any positive findings must be verified for legal admissibility. Samples showing presumptive positive results during Screening require further confirmation.

If the Screening stage yields a presumptive positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, drugs are recovered from hair at concentrations lower than those found in other forms like urine or saliva, highlighting the complexity of performing hair drug screening.

Positive Screening results are verified through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive findings undergo a washing process before confirmation, if necessary. From Accessioning through Confirmation, the entire laboratory process is evaluated under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and conformance to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug analysis can detect substances for as long as 90 days, a significantly longer period compared to urine testing.
  • Hard to deceive: The integrity of hair drug testing is maintained because it is challenging to manipulate or doctor the results.
  • Historical insight: Provides insight into drug use patterns extend over time, not just immediate or recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expenditure: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: While commonly known as "hair follicle tests", these tests evaluate the hair strand rather than the hair follicle located beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Lake Isabella, MI, the advantages of hair follicle testing over urine testing are evident. Hair tests offer superior accuracy and credibility by allowing detection of drug use over an extended timeframe. This method outshines traditional urine tests in its capacity to provide detailed insights into an individual's substance activity.

This technique offers a< b>prolonged detection period, tracing drug use back up to 90 days. It gives employers a complete perspective on a candidate’s or employee’s substance habits, well beyond the limitations of other testing methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
