Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Lansing, Michigan. For those requiring drug or alcohol analysis via hair, we specialize in this testing method and maintain facilities nationwide that are equipped to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body will suffice. Our hair analysis can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to specific hair testing needs.

In recent developments, the approach to drug testing increasingly prefers the hair follicle method. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists are swapping the conventional urine tests for hair analysis. Zero-tolerance policy companies, courts, and probation departments employ this test. Its significant advantage is a longer detection window, up to 90 days, observed directly, and nearly foolproof. Yet, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol presence. This method captures a comprehensive timeline of substance use, as it traps biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. Sampling hair near the scalp allows for an approximate 3-month detection period for substances. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, with minimal risk of tampering, and convenient for shipping.

A 1.5-inch section comprising around 200 hair strands (akin to a #2 pencil's width) from the scalp yields about 100mg, which is ideal for screening and confirmation processes. For tests like EtG, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is preferred. Using a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample is advisable. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair may be utilized. By "head hair," we specifically mean scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial steps for integrating a sample into the laboratory system. This includes ensuring the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data input absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary, rapid assessment for drug abuse detection. Though cost-effective, Screening must be followed by Confirmation to be legally valid. Samples flagged as positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation process.

For samples testing positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is gathered from the initial sampling and is then prepped for Extraction. In Extraction, drug substances are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods, like urine or oral fluid screenings, underscoring the complexity of hair drug testing.

Any positive results from Screening are confirmed through methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive undergo washing before Confirmation, as required. The procedure—from Accessioning through Confirmation—is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests offer up to a 90-day detection period, in contrast with urine tests which have shorter windows.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are challenging to compromise, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Provides historical data: They reveal patterns in drug usage over time, beyond recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Hair color and growth variables can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
