In Level Park, Michigan, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Specializing in hair tests for drugs and alcohol, we have centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specific substances.

Hair follicle tests have become a preferred method for drug testing. They're chosen by employers, courts, and substance professionals over urine tests. Employers with stringent no-drug policies, courts, and probation cases benefit. A standout advantage is its 90-day detection window, difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests remain optimal for recent 5-day use.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly valued as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of growing hair strands, hair reveals an extended history of substance use. Providing around a 3-month window for detection, hair samples collected near the scalp can identify alcohol and drug presence effectively. This method is straightforward in collection, relatively resistant to tampering, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield roughly 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a quantity of 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is suggested. Where scalp hair isn't an option, an equal quantity of body hair can be gathered. Head hair refers to only the scalp, whereas body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug test results encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the sample's introduction into the lab’s system. This phase ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry supplementing an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening acts as a preliminary examination for drug presence. Although it is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screening result must be validated for court acceptance. Presumptive positives identified in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Presumptively positive samples in Screening require additional hair from the primary sample for preparation in Extraction. In this stage, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly complex.

Confirmation for any positive screening result employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples with presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as warranted. The comprehensive laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and meets ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug assessments can trace drug use within a 90-day period, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are overwhelmingly challenging to manipulate, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Tracks usage patterns: Able to indicate a timeline of drug use rather than only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectability: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to emerge in hair samples.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses are generally more costly than alternative drug testing methodologies.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand, excluding the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing proves superior to traditional urine tests in Level Park, MI with its enhanced accuracy. Unlike urine tests, which might miss occasional use, hair tests capture a longer history of substance intake, providing a broader picture.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
