Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Little Lake, Michigan. For those requiring drug or alcohol hair tests, our centers, available across all U.S. cities, specialize in hair analysis. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. Hair analyses can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing solutions.

The shift towards hair follicle drug testing has become more common in recent years. This method is now often requested by employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Used by employers upholding strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probationers, hair tests offer a longer detection window, typically up to 90 days, ensuring observed collection and near-impossibility of tampering. Yet, to detect recent drug use, within approximately 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can detect alcohol and drugs over a period of up to three months. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for preliminary and conclusive testing. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair isn't accessible, a similar volume of body hair may be gathered. When indicating head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory's framework. This encompasses verifying that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, allocating a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any additional data input not available through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises a preliminary swift examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method for excluding drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be permissible in court. Any samples that yield presumptive positive results during Screening require secondary confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive result in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. Within this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), positioning hair drug screening as the most challenging approach to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is undertaken using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptively positive samples are washed as required before confirmation. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, compared to the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are very difficult to manipulate, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over time rather than solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistent results: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Little Lake, MI, hair follicle testing outshines traditional urine tests in terms of detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair tests provide a broader detection window, allowing for a more comprehensive review of substance use. Hair testing is particularly advantageous due to its non-invasive nature and its capacity to detect chronic drug use patterns, offering transparency that urine tests might not always deliver.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle tests in Little Lake, MI, offer an extended detection period, capturing drug use over a span of up to 90 days. This thorough timeframe allows employers to gain deeper insights into an individual's substance use history. By providing a more extended detection window, employers can make well-informed decisions, ensuring their workforce upholds drug-free standards while nurturing a safe work environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Employing hair follicle tests in Little Lake, MI, significantly decreases the chances of sample tampering. This method's robust nature ensures the results are reliable and credible. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
