In Lowell, Michigan, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive solutions for hair follicle drug testing. Whether you require a test for drugs or alcohol, our facilities across the nation can facilitate this. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown—or body hair—suffice. Our services cover drug and alcohol/ETG analysis alongside tailored testing options.

Recently, there has been a shift toward using hair follicle drug tests over traditional methods. Many employers, courts, and professionals dealing with substance misuse prioritize this method, as it supports strict policies against drugs in workplaces, courts, and parole situations. The key advantage is its prolonged detection capability, usually up to 90 days, and the secure observation process, which makes the test notoriously challenging to manipulate. Still, for drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair retains a historical record of alcohol and drugs by preserving biomarkers within its growing fibers. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeframe of up to about three months for both alcohol and drugs. It is easy to gather, relatively tamper-resistant, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch length from approximately 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimum sample size for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, a specimen weight of 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler's scale for measurement. If no scalp hair is available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses any other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedures for processing a drug test result encompass four major stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is processed in the lab system. It involves ensuring the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra information not covered in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment for potential drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage suspicion for most samples, a positive screening outcome requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening need subsequent corroboration.

In cases where a sample tests presumptively positive during the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this process, drugs are obtained from hair at much lower concentrations than seen in methodologies like urine or oral fluid testing, making hair drug screening one of the most intricate methodologies to perform.

Verification of a positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug testing can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to shorter periods applicable to urine tests.
  • Low possibility of tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond just recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Detectability of drugs in hair takes approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to alternate drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is conducted on the hair strand—not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Lowell, MI, has seen a growing preference for hair follicle testing over urine tests for several reasons. Hair testing is less likely to be affected by short-term abstinence, offering greater accuracy over time. This is valuable in environments where maintaining a drug-free policy is essential.

The accuracy and reliability of hair tests surpass urine tests, primarily due to their longer detection window and tamper-proof nature, ensuring consistent enforcement of drug policies.

Extended Detection Window

One of the significant advantages of hair follicle testing in Lowell, MI, is its extended detection window. Unlike traditional methods, hair testing can trace drug use for up to 90 days, presenting employers with a comprehensive overview of an individual's substance use behavior.

The extended period of detection allows employers and decision-makers to gain insights into long-term drug-use trends, supporting more informed decisions regarding employment and management.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
