At Accredited Drug Testing, we provide comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Lupton, Michigan. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we are hair testing specialists with centers available in every city across the nation to carry out hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head is required, though other body hair can be used. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have been increasingly preferred for their accuracy in drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are opting for this method over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests serve employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation. They offer a benefits like an extended detection period for up to 90 days, are collected under supervision, and are very challenging to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use, within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination has gained recognition as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a roughly 3-month detection window for alcohol and substance use. Hair is straightforward to collect, resistant to tampering, and easy to distribute.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and validation. For EtG, supplements, and/or assessments above 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It is recommended to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent portion of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, it pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, and so on).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary handling of a sample into a lab's system. It includes verifying the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data inputs not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial, rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court admissibility. Presumptive positives in Screening require secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are removed from hair at much lower concentrations than other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is considered the most complex methodology to undertake.

Verification of any positive screen result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptively positive are washed before confirmation, if necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter timeframe.
  • Difficulty to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Supplies historical data: It can depict a pattern of drug consumption over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs will take approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result inconsistencies: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the test itself analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Lupton, MI. The advantages of hair testing over urine tests are evident, particularly in terms of detection accuracy and reliability. While urine tests can be affected by short detection windows, hair tests provide a more comprehensive analysis. This method uncovers substance use patterns over a significantly prolonged period, offering employers a more thorough understanding of an individual's drug history.

Traditional urine tests often lack the precision necessary for stringent drug testing policies. Hair testing surpasses this method by minimizing the risk of false negatives or erroneous results. This ensures employers in Lupton, MI, can confidently enforce zero-tolerance policies with evidence-backed data. The increased detection window also means that hair testing can identify infrequent or past substance use that urine tests might miss.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Lupton, MI. A remarkable advantage of hair follicle testing is its ability to detect drug use over a lengthy duration, frequently up to 90 days. This feature offers an extensive view of an individual's substance use history, whether for pre-employment screening or ongoing compliance. Unlike short-term urine tests, hair tests can highlight patterns of regular or sporadic drug usage in a way that unveils a full picture.

Employers in Lupton, MI, benefit from this extended detection period as it provides a thorough background check that is both effective and transparent. By utilizing hair follicle tests, organizations acquire the crucial details needed to make informed decisions regarding prospective and current employees, enhancing workplace safety and reducing the risk of substance-related incidents.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method in Lupton, MI. Hair follicle testing is an excellent method for significantly reducing the potential for sample tampering. Unlike urine tests, which can be manipulated through various methods, hair tests offer an almost tamper-proof option. Individuals cannot easily alter these samples, making results both unquestionable and reliable for employers and legal entities.

The stringent procedures involved in hair testing ensure that each sample is meticulously collected and stored under observation, which minimizes the chances of adulteration. In Lupton, MI, businesses and professionals alike trust this method to ensure authenticity and integrity of drug test results, thereby answering concerns of result manipulation and bolstering confidence in the testing process.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
