Delivering comprehensive hair follicle drug tests, Accredited Drug Testing serves Mackinac Island, Michigan. Experts in hair testing, we offer services in cities nationwide, including alcohol and custom hair testing solutions. Most cases require 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair. Hair tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more.

Recently, hair follicle testing is gaining preference for drug screening over urine tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often select hair tests due to the longer detection window of up to 90 days, with observation during collection. While urine tests are more precise for recent use within 5 days, hair tests are nearly impossible to falsify.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has evolved into a robust means for identifying alcohol and drug use. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of developing hair strands, hair offers an extensive timeline of substance intake. If gathered near the scalp, hair provides a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tough to falsify, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional scopes, or tests surpassing ten panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest gauging the sample mass with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair may be utilized. When mentioning head hair, it specifically denotes scalp hair. Body hair covers all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug tests encompasses four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s framework. It encompasses confirming proper sealing and shipment of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data input absent in an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening involves a swift preliminary check for substance misuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to dismiss substance presence in most samples, a constructive screen must be validated to hold up in court. Samples presumed positive during Screening call for subsequent verification.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity in the Screening process, additional hair is gathered from the original sample to prepare for Extraction. In this phase, substances are removed from hair at notably reduced concentrations than in other approaches (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening as the most challenging approach to execute.

Confirmation of any affirmative screening finding is undertaken through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positive outcomes undergo washing before confirmation, as needed. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing identifies substance use up to 90 days, while urine tests have a briefer detection span.
  • Robust against tampering: It is extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Conveys historical insight: It illustrates a drug use pattern extending over time, beyond immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Detecting recent use: Drug presence becomes measurable in hair around 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than alternative drug assessment methods.
  • Result discreteness: Elements like hair hue and personalized hair growth variations can influence the drug metabolites concentration in the hair.

Note: Despite commonly being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
