Providing comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services, Accredited Drug Testing is the go-to choice in Mackinaw City, Michigan. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, our centers nationwide are equipped to perform these tests. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the head or body is required. These hair tests efficiently detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored testing solutions.

In recent times, hair follicle tests have gained popularity in drug testing methods. Increasingly, employers, courts, and substance abuse experts opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probation officers prefer hair tests for their extended detection period, up to 90 days, and their reliability against tampering. However, for detecting very recent drug use within a 5-day window, urine tests remain more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective approach for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair offers a historical record of alcohol and drug consumption by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month history for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to gather, less prone to falsification, and convenient to transport.

A standard collection involves a 1.5-inch length of around 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp, yielding 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for testing and verification. For tests like EtG, additional panels, or those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale is suggested. If scalp hair is missing, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair only pertain to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses other types (like facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory protocol for processing drug test samples encompasses four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the sample's initial entry into the lab system. This involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary, swift examination for drugs. Though a cost-efficient technique to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be validated for legal proceedings. Any Screening phase presumptive positives must undergo secondary confirmation.

For presumptive positives in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for further preparation in Extraction. At this stage, drug extraction from hair occurs at considerably lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging method.

Confirmation of any positive screen is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives undergo a wash prior to confirmation when necessary. The whole process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and aligns with the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It shows a timeline of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Lacks recent use detection: It takes about 5-7 days before drugs are detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other testing options.
  • Result variance: Elements like hair color and individual growth patterns affect metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
