Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Manitou Beach, Michigan. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair testing is paired with access to our testing centers across all U.S. cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is sufficient for analysis. Our tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to custom hair testing needs.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a favored method. Many workplaces, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now request hair testing over the traditional urine analysis. Employers with strict drug policies, judges, and probation officials often utilize hair follicle tests. Their key advantage is an extended drug detection span, reaching up to 90 days, performed through monitored collection processes that are difficult to falsify. Yet, for drug use within the first 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair strand, providing a long-term history of drug and alcohol use. When collected close to the scalp, hair offers a detection window of up to roughly three months for substances like alcohol and other drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to send for analysis.

A 1.5-inch sample containing approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for testing and verification. For additional tests such as EtG, or more than 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is recommended. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, it refers to scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step, involving processing the sample into the laboratory's system. This step includes ensuring that the sample was sealed and shipped properly, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any additional data entry not completed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary method for detecting drugs of abuse. Though Screening is cost-efficient for ruling out drug use on most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally admissible. Samples that screen posiitive necessitate a secondary confirmation step.

If a sample is presumed positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is recognized as the most challenging to execute.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed as required prior to confirmation. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under both the Hair designation by the College of American Pathologists (CAP) and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical data provision: It can demonstrate a pattern of drug use over time, rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs are not detectable in hair for approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact the concentration of drug metabolites.

Note: Though often called "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
