Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Maple Rapids, Michigan. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in this process and hosts testing centers in cities nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches at the crown of your head, or body hair in select instances, is needed. Our tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other specialized hair testing options.

Over recent years, the practice of drug testing has increasingly utilized hair follicle drug tests. Numerous employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts now demand hair tests over the typical urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies for drug use, courts, and individuals on probation commonly employ these tests. The chief advantage of hair follicle drug testing is its prolonged detection span, often up to 90 days, with an observed collection process that is nearly impossible to subvert. However, for substances used within the last 5 days, urine tests still offer the best accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair drug and alcohol tests are recognized as effective means for identifying substance use. Hair naturally captures biomarkers within its strands as it grows, thus offering a prolonged history of drug and alcohol consumption. When hair samples are collected near the scalp, they can reveal substance use for an extensive period of about three months. This method of collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

Acquiring a sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximating the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides an optimal 100mg sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplemental, or drug panel tests exceeding ten, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. In situations where scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used instead. When referring to head hair, this pertains specifically to the scalp. All other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.) are categorized as body hair.

Process Overview

There are four fundamental steps in the lab processing of a drug test: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, samples undergo initial processing into the laboratory’s system. This includes ensuring the sample's sealing and proper shipment, assigning a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any additional data entries not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary examination for identifying potential drug misuse. Although Screening is an economical means to exclude drug consumption in most samples, any positive screening result requires subsequent confirmation for court admissibility. Samples flagged as presumptively positive during Screening undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample yields a presumptively positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for further preparation during Extraction. This step involves isolating drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most complex methodology.

Confirming any positive screening results is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Prior to Confirmation, all samples marked as presumptively positive are cleaned as necessary. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to review according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation guidelines.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests have the capability to identify drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to shorter detection spans of urine tests.
  • Resistance to deception: The likelihood of cheating a hair drug test is minimal, resulting in more reliable findings.
  • Historical usage insight: This method can track patterns of drug consumption across a duration rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: There is a 5-7 day period needed for drugs to become detectable through hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically have higher costs compared to other testing procedures.
  • Result variability: Influences like hair color differences and individual growth rates can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Maple Rapids, MI, hair follicle tests offer noteworthy advantages over urine tests. Hair testing presents a wider detection window, often extending several months, whereas urine tests only cover recent usage. This breadth gives employers a better picture of an individual's long-term habits, helping maintain stringent workplace standards.

The increased reliability of hair follicle testing reduces the possibility of manipulation that often plagues urine tests. For employers and legal entities, this ensures higher levels of trust and efficacy in results, fostering a safer environment. The choice between the two becomes clear when considering the longer-term accuracy of hair tests in drug usage detection.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing is remarkable in Maple Rapids, MI, offering a retrospective view of an individual's drug use up to 90 days. This is invaluable for employers aiming to assess a thorough substance use history beyond the immediate past, enhancing understanding of consistent behavior patterns.

Employers benefit greatly from this feature, gaining a comprehensive overview of an employee’s past substance use, which traditional tests might miss. This capability aids substantially in making informed decisions, particularly for roles demanding high responsibility and safety, ensuring a drug-free workplace culture.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Maple Rapids, MI significantly mitigates the risk of sample adulteration. The robust nature of this method reduces manipulation opportunities seen in other testing forms, resulting in uncompromised and reliable results. Hair tests offer solid evidence, greatly minimizing discrepancies in drug testing outcomes.

For employers, this reassurance means less chance of fraudulent samples and more confidence in maintaining drug-free environments. The meticulous collection and analysis process add layers of integrity, assuring all stakeholders that results are authentic and unbiased.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
