If you're in need of either a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to expert. With centers in cities across the nation, we're equipped to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Hair analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity for drug testing. Employers, courts, and professionals in substance abuse often opt for hair testing over the traditional urine tests. This form of testing is crucial for employers with strict drug policies, courts, and those on probation. The key advantage of hair follicle tests lies in its extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected under observation, minimizing the chance for manipulation. However, for identifying recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests still hold the edge.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol usage. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance use by securing biomarkers within the fibers of the maturing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair provides nearly a 3-month detection window for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat difficult to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample with approximately 200 strands of hair (around the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will result in 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or testing above 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equal volume of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step includes ensuring that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and conducting any further data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial swift evaluation for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical way to dismiss drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be acceptable in court. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

In cases where a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are withdrawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Any positive screening outcome is verified via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are prepped for confirmation as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can disclose drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thus increasing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical data: It can reveal a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect immediate use: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination itself analyzes the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
