In Mattawan, Michigan, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle tests for detecting drugs or alcohol. Specializing in hair testing, we have facilities nationwide for conducting these tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body for the sample. Hair can be analyzed for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized testing options.

Hair follicle testing has become more prevalent over the years for drug analysis. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with strict drug policies, and they offer a longer detection period of up to 90 days. However, urine tests remain more accurate for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a historical record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. Collecting hair close to the scalp allows for a detection timeframe of up to approximately three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For tests such as EtG, add-ons, and screens exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of sample is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. When mentioning head hair, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in the lab process for achieving a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails integrating a sample into a lab’s system initially. This process comprises ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary rapid analysis for drugs of abuse. Though cost-effective for negating drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to hold up in court. Samples that are presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample registers a presumptive positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction preparation. During this step, drugs are isolated from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening exceptionally challenging to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is facilitated by GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicated as presumptive positives are washed prior to confirmation as required. The entirety of the lab processing from Accessioning to Confirmation is monitored per the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use spanning up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a reduced detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is notably challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Delivers historical insight: It can demonstrate a timeline of drug usage over an extended period, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Detection in hair generally requires about 5-7 days for drugs to appear.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier compared to alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis targets the hair strand rather than the scalp's hair follicle

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
