With its comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services available in Maybee, Michigan, Accredited Drug Testing stands out. Specializing in hair tests for drugs and alcohol, our nationwide centers, easily accessible in every city, are equipped for precise hair testing. A minimum hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is ideally required, allowing us to test for substances, alcohol/ETG, or any custom hair testing need.

More and more drug-testing techniques are incorporating hair follicle analysis. Instead of traditional urine tests, this method is favored by employers, courts, and professionals in substance abuse fields. Those with strict drug-free policies find it ideal due to its extended detection time, generally up to 90 days, its monitored collection process, and its resistance to tampering, though urine tests still provide the best results for very recent drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair serves as a long-term indicator by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers as the hair grows. When acquired close to the scalp, hair provides an approximate 3-month time frame for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is not only easy to collect but also hard to tamper with and straightforward to send.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 hairs (similar in size to a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional components, and tests over 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair is acceptable. 'Head hair' refers solely to scalp hair, while 'body hair' includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test outcome involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, samples are initially processed within the lab system, ensuring proper sealing and shipping, assigning of a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data input not available through an electronic chain of custody.

The Screening phase provides a preliminary check for drug presence. While cost-effective for negating drug use in most cases, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples presumed positive require a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample is suspected positive during Screening, more hair is taken from the original sample to prepare for Extraction. This phase extracts drugs from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screen result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all samples presumed positive are cleaned as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is validated according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can indicate drug use trends over time rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," these tests actually assess the hair strand, not the under-scalp follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
