Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive services for hair follicle drug testing in Midland Park, Michigan. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, we are specialists in hair testing, with testing centers available in cities across the nation able to perform these tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body for testing. These tests analyze drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized.

Nowadays, a more prevalent method for drug testing involves the use of hair follicle drug tests. This approach is increasingly preferred by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals instead of standard urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation often rely on hair follicle tests. The main advantage is a broader detection window, spanning up to 90 days, with observed collection to prevent tampering. However, urine tests remain the most reliable for detecting recent usage within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extensive record of alcohol and substances by capturing biomarkers within the expanding hair fiber. When collected near the scalp, hair can deliver a detection window of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When referencing head hair, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core stages in processing a drug test result at the laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial task of entering a sample into a laboratory's system. It entails ensuring that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input not provided by a digital chain of custody process.

Screening entails a preliminary swift verification for drugs of misuse. Although Screening provides a cost-efficient means to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples that show presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample appears presumptively positive during Screening, further hair is taken from the primary specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if needed. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a reduced detection period.
  • Difficulty in deceiving: Manipulating a hair drug test is very difficult, leading to more precise results.
  • Tracks usage trends: It gives a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It typically requires about 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually incur higher costs compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can impact the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
