In Milleville Beach, Michigan, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol analysis, we're experts in hair tests, with centers nationwide for your convenience. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is sufficient for testing. Options include drug, alcohol/ETG, or custom hair testing analyses.

Lately, drug testing increasingly involves hair follicle analyses. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer hair tests over traditional urine samples. Zero-tolerance employers and probation officers leverage hair follicle tests for their longer detection window—up to 90 days—and their security. Yet, for detecting recent use within 5 days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has evolved into an effective method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. By embedding biomarkers into the hair strand's fibers, hair holds a detailed record of alcohol and other drug consumption. When taken adjacent to the scalp, hair can provide a detection timeframe of up to three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of about 200 strands of hair (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For tests involving EtG, add-ons, and/or exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. The term "head hair" specifically pertains to scalp hair. "Body hair" encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug test results involves four main phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning marks the initial step of entering a sample into a laboratory system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any supplemental data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal validation. Samples with presumptive positives from Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample display presumptive positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), highlighting hair drug screening's complex execution.

Confirmation for any positive screening result is conducted utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation as required. From Accessioning through Confirmation, the comprehensive laboratory process is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests are capable of identifying drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Challenge to compromise: Tampering with a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals an extended drug use pattern, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • No recent use detection: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often incur higher costs compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can alter drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Even though frequently called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Milleville Beach, MI
When comparing hair follicle tests to traditional urine tests, the former shows clear advantages, especially in detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests offer an extended detection window, crucial for maintaining a zero-tolerance policy. In Milleville Beach, businesses are increasingly adopting this superior methodology.

Unlike urine tests, hair follicle testing provides a longer detection period, making it the preferred choice for tracking consistent drug use. For organizations focused on safe and drug-free environments, switching to hair tests ensures comprehensive monitoring and superior accuracy. This shift is gaining popularity in the region.

Extended Detection Window

Extended Detection Window in Milleville Beach, MI
Hair follicle testing offers an impressive 90-day detection window, significantly longer than traditional methods. This extended period allows employers in Milleville Beach to assess an individual's substance use history effectively. Hair analysis becomes an essential tool for employers aiming for a comprehensive understanding of their workforce's habits.

By using hair testing, you gain insight into an applicant's past drug use, supporting better hiring decisions. The extended window also reflects long-term trends rather than isolated incidents, providing a more complete picture. Employers interested in thorough vetting before hiring benefit immensely from this capability.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
