In Montague, Michigan, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing solutions. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, our specialty in hair testing ensures you receive expert services, with testing centers available across various cities nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary from the head or body for testing. Options include drug, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair testing analyses.

Over recent years, drug testing methods increasingly favor hair follicle tests. This approach is now commonly mandated by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals instead of traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance drug policies benefit from hair follicle tests, known for their extended detection window of up to 90 days and near-impossible cheating opportunities. Yet, for drug use detection within 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When sourced near the scalp, hair can offer about a 3-month detection period for substances. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, additional tests, and/or more comprehensive screenings above 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair pertain specifically to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result involves four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step of integrating a sample into a laboratory’s system. This phase includes confirming that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is the primary method for quickly assessing the presence of drugs. Although Screening is a budget-friendly way to rule out drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be validated for court admissibility. Any samples testing presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for the Extraction phase. During this phase, drugs are separated from hair at considerably lower concentrations than those in methodologies like urine or oral fluid testing, making hair drug screening one of the most challenging techniques to execute.

Positive screening results undergo confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating presumptive positivity are cleaned before confirmation as required. Every stage from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to compromise: Hair drug tests are difficult to tamper with, ensuring more precise results.
  • Tracks historical usage: Provides an overview of drug use over time, not just recent occurrences.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often cost more compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Varied outcomes: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests," the focus of the test is the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why is hair follicle testing superior to urine tests in Montague, MI? The answer lies in its enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests surpass traditional urine methods by identifying substance use over a protracted period, offering a more comprehensive overview. The robustness of hair analyses translates into better enforcement of zero-tolerance policies and bolsters trust in test results.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Montague, MI, boasts an extensive detection window, capturing drug use over 90 days. This long-term analysis grants employers a thorough understanding of an individual's substance history. This prolonged insight is crucial when making informed decisions about potential employees, ensuring a drug-free workplace.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
