Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Mount Clemens, MI. For those needing a hair drug or alcohol test, our centers are equipped nationwide to administer these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Hair samples can be evaluated for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle tests have become a preferred method for drug testing. They're requested by many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals in place of urine tests. Hair tests appeal due to their extended detection period of up to 90 days, making them hard to manipulate. However, urine tests are still preferred for drug use detection within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying substance use. Hair serves as a prolonged record of drug and alcohol use by capturing biomarkers within the hair's growing fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair can provide a detection window of up to approximately 3 months for substances. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to ship.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the hair on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent amount of body hair can be obtained. When discussing head hair, we refer specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, and so on).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the lab handling of a substance test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a specimen into the lab’s framework. This process verifies the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and addresses any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for illicit substances. Though Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for court acceptance. Any samples initially testing positive in Screening require further verification.

When a sample seems positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug analysis the most complex method to execute.

Verification of any positive screen is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating positivity are cleansed before confirmation as required. The comprehensive lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited by both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO/IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Reduced likelihood of cheating: Manipulating a hair drug test is quite difficult, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides usage history: It illustrates a drug use trend over time, rather than solely recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent activity: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternative testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Important: Commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Mount Clemens, MI, hair follicle testing outshines urine tests with its superior detection accuracy. Unlike conventional urine tests, hair sampling captures longer-term substance use, offering more comprehensive insights. It provides consistent reliability, ensuring effective drug use monitoring.
As hair tests map a broader substance history, they allow employers and legal entities to uphold stricter compliance standards.

Extended Detection Window

The major advantage of hair follicle testing in Mount Clemens, MI, is its extended detection window of up to 90 days. This offers employers and agencies a detailed view of an individual's substance use history. Compared to conventional tests that often look back mere weeks, hair testing reveals long-term patterns, assisting in thorough evaluations of potential hires or employees.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Mount Clemens, MI, hair follicle tests are renowned for being a tamper-resistant testing method. This technique significantly minimizes the risk of sample adulteration, yielding credible results that stakeholders can trust. The stringent collection process, often observed, ensures the integrity of the sample, eliminating concerns found in fluid-based testing methods.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
