Employment, Court Ordered, Probation, Family

Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Muir, Michigan. For individuals requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, boasting centers across all cities nationwide capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Hair tests are versatile for analyzing drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing needs.

The hair follicle drug test has become a favored method for drug testing in recent years. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals opt for hair drug tests over standard urine tests. Employers with stringent no-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation often utilize hair follicle drug tests. The key advantage is its extended drug detection window, up to 90 days, with an observed collection process that is hard to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The strands of hair record long-term traces of alcohol and drugs by embedding markers within the hair's structure as it grows. When obtained near the scalp, hair can indicate up to roughly a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil thickness) from the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for preliminary and confirmatory testing. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is suggested. We advise using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair can't be obtained, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses other hair types (such as facial or underarm hair).

Process Overview

The primary steps in laboratory drug test processing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves introducing a sample into a lab’s system initially. This step checks that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns an unidentified LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any outstanding data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid review for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, a positive result must be verified to be valid in legal settings. Any Screening samples that test presumptively positive require further confirmation.

If presumptive positivity arises during Screening, additional hair is sourced from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, substances are removed from hair in much lower amounts than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug testing as the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening finding involves GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample is cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which feature a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is notably challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing the reliability of outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: It can deliver a trend of substance use over a span of time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become noticeable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the level of drug substrates in the hair.

Note: Though frequently termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Muir, MI
Hair follicle tests surpass traditional urine tests in detection accuracy and reliability. Hair testing covers a longer detection window, offering more comprehensive insights into drug use compared to urine tests which are limited to recent consumption.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
