Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Norwood, Michigan. Individuals needing either a drug or alcohol hair test will find that our specialty lies in hair testing, available at our centers across all cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed. Tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other hair testing options.

In recent times, the preference for drug testing methods has increasingly leaned towards hair follicle tests. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair tests over standard urine tests. This method is favored by employers enforcing zero-tolerance to drugs, legal bodies, and probationers. Hair tests offer an extended drug detection window of up to 90 days, are completed under observation, and are robust against tampering. Yet, urine tests remain superior for detecting drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides an extended history of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair offers up to a roughly 3-month detection duration for alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is easy, difficult to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising approximately 200 strands of hair (nearly the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for examination and validation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or evaluations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We recommend measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent portion of body hair might be gathered. When referring to head hair, we are specifying scalp hair only. Body hair pertains to all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial handling of a specimen into a lab’s system. This includes authenticating that the sample was appropriately sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screening needs confirmation to be acceptable in court. Any samples that are tentatively positive in Screening require secondary validation.

If a sample is tentatively positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Every presumptive positive sample is cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection duration.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is exceedingly difficult to deceive a hair drug test, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Supplies historical information: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent usage: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Results variability: Elements such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test actually analyzes the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
