Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug and alcohol testing services in Omer, Michigan. If you're in need of such testing, Accredited Drug Testing's expertise in hair analysis stands out, with centers available throughout the U.S. and in every city that can conduct the tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is usable. The tests cover drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other bespoke options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become the method of choice. Many organizations, legal systems, and professionals in substance abuse prefer it over the conventional urine test. For businesses with strict no-drug policies, or for the judicially monitored, it's invaluable. Its main advantage is the extended detection of up to 90 days, making it hard to compromise during collection, unlike urine tests, which are superior for recent drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term usage history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand that grows. When gathered near to the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of around 200 hair strands (approximating the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additions, and/or tests over 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. The term head hair refers solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the laboratory management of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory system. This involves ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and delivered, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not accounted for by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for substance misuse. Though Screening is an economical means to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally acceptable. Any samples with presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive result during the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging procedures to execute.

Positive Screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as applicable. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a more limited detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows usage patterns: It can illustrate a history of drug use over time, unlike methods that only reveal recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs take roughly 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Even though commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When considering drug testing in Omer, MI, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests. Its superior detection accuracy allows for a more reliable assessment of substance use. Unlike urine tests, which offer only short-term detection, hair testing provides a much broader view of an individual's history. In situations where longer detection periods are essential, hair tests are the preferred choice.

Extended Detection Window

The remarkable extended detection window of hair follicle testing, up to 90 days, offers invaluable insights in Omer, MI. Employers benefit from a comprehensive view of an applicant's or employee's substance use history, helping ensure a safe and productive work environment. This extended timeframe allows for more informed decisions, promoting workplace safety and compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
