Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Rapid City, Michigan. If a hair or alcohol drug test is needed, hair testing is our specialty, and we have locations throughout the USA ready to conduct this test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options for hair analysis.

In recent years, drug testing methods have increasingly relied on hair follicle drug tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals favor this over a conventional urine test. Those with zero-tolerance drug policies, including courts and probationers, use hair tests due to their longer detection window, up to 90 days, and because they are collected in an observed manner, making them hard to cheat. However, urine tests remain the most reliable for drug use in the last five days.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs by holding biomarkers within the growing hair strand’s fibers. When cut close to the scalp, hair can reveal up to a three-month timeframe for alcohol and other drug detection. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively difficult to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken from the scalp region will yield 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, it is suggested to use 150mg of the sample. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. When referencing head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types, including facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result consists of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning refers to the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory's framework. This includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry not managed by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary fast examination for abusive drugs. Screening is a cost-effective option to exclude drug consumption in most samples, but a positive result needs confirmation to be validated in legal proceedings. Any presumptive positives found in Screening demand an additional confirmatory test.

When a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the starting specimen and readied for Extraction. In this procedure, drugs are retrieved from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complicated technique to execute.

The confirmation of any positive screen result employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes assessment under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a more limited detection period.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Reveals historical usage: It presents a timeline of drug utilization over an extended period, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair only after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Individual factors like hair color and growth rate may influence drug metabolite concentrations within hair.

Note: Though often known as "hair follicle tests", the testing itself examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing the advantages of hair follicle testing over traditional urine testing in Rapid City, MI, the former wins in detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests can trace drug use up to 90 days back, offering a comprehensive view unlike urine tests. The inability to cheat the hair test collection makes it a more trusted testing method in maintaining a drug-free environment, essential for workplaces and legal entities.

The benefits of hair testing over urine testing include a robust detection window and high reliability. While urine tests efficiently serve short-term detection, hair tests provide a clearer picture of an individual's drug history, essential information for employers with strict no-drug-use policies. Ultimately, opting for hair tests enhances the efficacy and integrity of drug-testing systems.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle drug testing in Rapid City, MI, is up to 90 days, providing insight into a person’s prolonged substance use history. This period allows employers to access a more detailed view of an individual's behavior regarding drug use, surpassing urine tests' capabilities, which generally detect recent drug use only.

By offering a longer detection period, hair testing in Rapid City, MI, supplies thorough documentation of substance use. Employers benefit by assessing an individual's propensity for drug use over a more protracted timeframe, making informed decisions that impact workplace productivity and safety.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Rapid City, MI, present a tamper-resistant solution for drug testing, significantly reducing the risk of sample adulteration compared to urine tests. The method in which hair samples are collected and analyzed ensures that results are reliable and unquestionable, granting employers and legal systems the confidence needed in drug testing outcomes.

Thanks to their robust collection process, tampering with hair follicle tests is nearly impossible. This attribute makes them a trusted choice for those wanting absolute certainty in drug test results, preserving test integrity and upholding rigorous standards essential for maintaining compliance and accountability in various environments.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
