Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Reese, Michigan. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to specialist with nationwide centers equipped to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head's crown or elsewhere can be used for most tests. Hair analyses can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for other testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more common in substance detection processes. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are increasingly requiring these tests over urine ones. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance substance policies, courts, and probationary services. The major advantage they offer is a longer detection window—up to 90 days—accurately observed, and difficult to falsify, whereas urine tests remain the best option for identifying recent use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Testing hair has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. Hair collected near the scalp can reveal up to a 90-day history of alcohol and drug use. It is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hairs (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, equates to 100mg, which is ideal for initial and confirmatory testing. For EtG and tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is recommended. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equal portion of body hair is suitable. References to head hair indicate only scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Summary

The primary stages in laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary integration of a sample into a lab's system. This step includes ensuring proper sealing and shipping of the specimen, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial, swift assessment for drug presence. Though cost-effective, a positive result in Screening requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any sample preliminarily positive in Screening necessitates additional verification.

Presumptive positives in the Screening phase lead to further hair being taken from the sample for Extraction. During this phase, substances are extracted at lower concentrations than in other tests (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening more challenging.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods confirm any positive from Screening. Presumed positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025.

Hair drug testing benefits:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a narrower timespan.
  • Low chance of manipulation: It's quite challenging to alter hair drug tests, yielding more precise results.
  • Offers usage history: It depicts a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier compared to other drug tests.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual growth disparities can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination itself focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
