Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Rockport, Michigan. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we excel in hair testing, with centers in every city across the nation ready to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized testing options.

Recently, the trend in drug testing has shifted towards hair follicle tests. More employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Organizations and individuals with stringent drug policies utilize hair follicle tests due to their extended detection period, which can identify drug use for up to 90 days, offering an observed and almost foolproof collection. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the preferred choice for recent drug use detection within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair, it offers a long-term record of alcohol and other substances. When taken near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and other drugs over an approximate 3-month timeframe. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch portion of around 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal sample for analysis and confirmation. For tests like EtG, additional panels, and those above 10, 150mg of hair is preferred. We advise using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. When mentioning head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal stages in lab processing for a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial input of a sample into a laboratory's system, ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial swift assessment for abuse substances. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to negate drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples preliminarily positive during Screening necessitate secondary validation.

If a sample returns presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is sourced from the original sample for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are withdrawn from hair at markedly lower concentrations than with other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques verify any positive screening results. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo necessary washing. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed both under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in accordance with ISO/IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments reveal drug consumption up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceedingly tough, leading to more precise outcomes.
  • Delivers past consumption data: It charts a pattern of drug use over time, unlike tests indicating only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations generally incur higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Factors like hair pigment and personal discrepancies in hair growth can influence the presence of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Rockport, MI, the advantages of hair follicle testing over urine testing are clear. Hair testing offers superior detection accuracy and reliability, making it the preferred choice. The extended detection period and robustness against tampering mean that hair testing can reveal drug use that urine tests might miss, providing a more comprehensive view of an individual's substance use history.

Extended Detection Window

For employers in Rockport, MI, hair follicle testing stands out due to its extended detection window, allowing drug use to be traced back up to 90 days. This longer timeframe provides a thorough understanding of an applicant's or employee's substance habits, helping employers make informed decisions about potential hires or policy compliance.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
