Offering comprehensive hair follicle drug testing, Accredited Drug Testing provides services in Roscommon, Michigan. Our expertise lies in hair-based drug and alcohol assessments. We operate centers throughout the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is needed. We offer customizable hair analyses for drugs, alcohol, or specialized testing options.

The popularity of hair follicle drug testing has increased for drug screenings. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists prefer hair tests over urine tests. These are favored by employers with zero-drug policies, courts, and probation programs due to their extended detection period, up to 90 days. Tests are supervised, minimizing cheating. However, for detecting very recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair serves as a chronicle for alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer up to roughly a 3-month detection window for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively challenging to adulterate, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (about the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, the same quantity of body hair may be obtained. When referring to head hair, it pertains exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key stages of the laboratory procedure for a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial handling of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This encompasses confirming that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is an economical way to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in court. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenge to cheat: It is exceedingly difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring the results are more precise.
  • Offers historical information: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over a stretch of time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Factors including hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand and does not assess the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing offers several advantages over traditional urine tests in Roscommon, MI. It outperforms urine testing with superior detection accuracy and reliability. Employers benefit from its enhanced ability to detect long-term drug use, making it a more effective option for comprehensive evaluations. Hair testing's non-intrusive nature combined with its extended detection window gives it an edge over urine tests.

The increased demand for hair follicle testing stems from its robust accuracy and difficulty to manipulate results, unlike urine samples that can be adulterated. This testing method provides a highly reliable alternative for organizations aiming for zero-tolerance drug policies.

Extended Detection Window

One of the key advantages of hair follicle testing in Roscommon, MI, is its extended detection window, capable of identifying drug use up to 90 days. This duration provides employers with a more comprehensive view of an individual’s substance history. By offering a longer lookback period, hair testing ensures that any history of drug use is more likely to be detected, supporting informed hiring decisions and ongoing monitoring.

Employers can rely on hair testing for a detailed analysis of an applicant or employee’s drug use. Its ability to trace back months instead of days makes it a superior option for those requiring long-term behavioral insights.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Roscommon, MI, hair follicle tests offer a tamper-resistant testing method that greatly reduces the chance of sample adulteration. Unlike other forms of drug testing, hair samples are not easily altered, providing reliable and indisputable results. This method ensures that the integrity of the testing process is maintained, delivering trustworthy findings for employers.

The security offered by hair testing is unparalleled. Reducing the risk of tampered results, it gives employers and authorities confidence in the accuracy of their drug screening, facilitating fair and informed decision-making.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
