Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug examinations in Saranac, Michigan. If you're in need of hair or alcohol testing, our expertise in hair analysis is unmatched, with centers available in all cities across the Nation for conducting such tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body may be required in most instances. Hair analysis can target drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other bespoke testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle tests have been more widely employed in drug detection methods. Rather than traditional urine tests, many workplaces, judicial systems, and addiction specialists now prefer hair drug testing. Companies with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationary monitoring often resort to hair tests. The key advantage lies in a prolonged detection period for substances, typically up to 90 days, ensuring an observed collection that is nearly foolproof. However, for identifying drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard for precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair sampling is increasingly recognized as a robust technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands encapsulate indicators of alcohol and other substances within the strands' fibers, offering an extended timeline of substance use. When cut near the scalp, hair samples present a potential detection duration of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. The collection process is straightforward, tampering with hair samples presents challenges, and they are simple to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches in length consisting of approximately 200 strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp equates to 100mg, deemed optimal for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler's scale for specimen weighing is recommended. Should scalp hair be absent, a comparable amount of body hair may be gathered. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test involves four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the preliminary processing of a sample is integrated into the laboratory's system. This phase encompasses confirming proper sealing and shipment of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry required not facilitated by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for drug presence. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient means to exclude drug presence in most samples, any positive screen requires validation for legal admissibility. Samples flagged as preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Presumptive positive findings during the Screening phase lead to additional hair being extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, substances are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other forms (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug analysis particularly challenging.

Any positive result from Screening undergoes Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo cleansing prior to confirmation when necessary. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the laboratory processes are scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Cheating is challenging: Cheating on a hair drug test is notably difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical patterns: It reveals patterns of substance use over time rather than simply recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: A time frame of roughly 5-7 days is required for substances to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Variability in results: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", this test evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Saranac, MI, hair follicle testing stands superior due to its enhanced detection abilities compared to urine tests. Hair testing provides more accurate readings, efficiently revealing long-term substance use while offering reliable results.

Compared to traditional urine tests, which have a shorter detection window, hair tests provide a comprehensive analysis of habitual drug usage. Their dependability in uncovering substance abuse is unmatched.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing captures drug usage over a longer period, up to 90 days in Saranac, MI, providing employers with a detailed view of an individual's consumption history. Such extended coverage is invaluable for thorough evaluations.

This prolonged detection window allows for a more extended analysis period, offering a well-rounded insight into potential substance use patterns, which is particularly beneficial for employers seeking reliable information.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
