Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing in South Gull Lake, Michigan. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing is a leader in hair analysis, with facilities nationwide, ready to conduct hair tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is generally needed. Hair samples can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing needs.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred testing method. More employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests instead of conventional urine samples. Hair follicle tests are favored by firms with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation. The chief advantage is its extended detection, generally up to 90 days, requiring observed collection, and is almost impossible to alter. However, for drug detection within 5 days, urine tests remain highly credible.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected from near the scalp, it offers a detection window of about three months for various substances. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, difficult to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch snippet of about 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields roughly 100mg of hair, which is ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the specimen. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a similar weight of body hair may be taken instead. When we mention head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result includes four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of the sample into the lab's system, ensuring it was properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary evaluation for drug substances. While it's a cost-effective method to potentially exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Presumptive positive samples in this phase require further confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptively positive result during Screening, more hair from the sample is utilized for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a complex methodology.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples deemed presumptively positive undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection horizon.
  • Hard to manipulate: The integrity of a hair drug test is tough to compromise, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Detection in hair takes approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself, rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing stands out over traditional urine tests in South Gull Lake, MI due to its superior detection accuracy. While urine tests capture recent drug use, hair tests offer a long-term view of a person's substance history. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
