Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Spring Arbor, Michigan. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, our specialty is hair testing. We have facilities throughout the nation, ready to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing requirements.

Hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity in recent years as a method for substance screening. Numerous employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests to standard urine tests. Employers with no drug policy tolerance, courts, and those on probation predominantly use these tests. The key advantage is the extended detection window of up to 90 days, with monitored sample collection, making deception almost impossible. Nevertheless, urine tests remain most accurate for detecting use within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing has become recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair supplies an extended timeline of alcohol and drug presence by encapsulating biomarkers within its fibers as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers approximately a three-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the area closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and verification. For EtG, additional substances, and/or examinations involving more than 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent volume of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, it refers exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial processing of a sample into the lab’s system. This step verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening offers a budget-friendly method for eliminating drug usage in most samples, a positive screening must be validated to hold up in court. Any samples indicating a presumptive positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample show a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for preparation in the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result proceeds via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives are washed before confirmation as required. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Less prone to deception: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Delivers historical insights: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests are typically costlier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistencies in outcomes: Factors like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite often being described as "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
