Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Sunfield, Michigan. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, and we have centers in every city across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is required. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specified substances tailored to your needs.

In recent times, using hair follicle sampling for drug tests has become more commonplace. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are now often opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing is favored by organizations with strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probationers. The key advantage is an extended detection window of up to 90 days, with direct observation of the collection process, making it highly tamper-proof. However, urine tests remain the best choice for detecting recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. The strands of hair offer a comprehensive timeline of drug and alcohol consumption by capturing biomarkers within the hair's fibers. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection timeframe of up to three months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair sampling is easy to perform, relatively tough to tamper with, and simple to ship.

A sample size of 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the sample. If head hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, we are specifically referring to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test outcome involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample for its entry into a laboratory's system, which includes confirming that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning it a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and finalizing any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody module.

Screening encompasses an initial rapid assessment for common drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug usage in the majority of samples, a positive screening requires confirmation to be considered valid in legal contexts. Any samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening must undergo a secondary verification.

If a sample tests preliminarily positive during Screening, additional hair from the original specimen is prepared for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a much subtler concentration than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug testing as the most challenging method to conduct.

Any positive screening result undergoes Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with preliminary positive results are cleaned before Confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and aligned with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Challenge to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring the results are more reliable.
  • Chronological data: It can document a trend of drug use over time, rather than just indicating recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other forms of drug testing.
  • Variable outcomes: Individual factors like hair color and growth rates can influence drug metabolites' concentration in the hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", the testing is conducted on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Sunfield, MI, hair follicle testing outshines urine tests due to its improved detection accuracy. While traditional urine tests offer limited detection windows, hair tests can signal substance use history of up to 90 days. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
