Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Temperance, Michigan. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing solutions, with facilities located across all cities nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be tested. We provide analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair testing services.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method in recent years. Employers, the judicial system, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly opt for hair testing over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by organizations enforcing strict no-drug policies, justice systems, and probation services. One of the main advantages is the extended detection window, which can reveal drug use up to 90 days back, with an observed collection method that makes it nearly impossible to tamper with, although urine tests remain most precise for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a history of drug and alcohol use by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand’s fibers as it grows. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can offer a detection period of up to around 3 months for both alcohol and drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample size for initial screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests involving over 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If hair from the scalp is not accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This step checks that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as an initial rapid check for drugs of abuse. While Screening provides a cost-efficient way to rule out drug use for most samples, any positive outcome requires confirmation to be accepted in legal settings. Samples that are tentatively positive during Screening must undergo further confirmation.

If a sample tests tentatively positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed to be positive are cleansed before confirmation, as necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: It's extremely challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical insight: Hair tests can show a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become noticeable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Higher cost: Hair drug tests are typically more costly compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing proves superior to urine testing in several ways. Firstly, it offers a much longer detection window, which provides a broader overview of an individual's substance use history. Secondly, hair tests eliminate the risk of cheating through sample tampering or substitution, a concern common with urine tests. This unwavering accuracy is invaluable for organizations requiring stringent drug-free environments.

Comparatively, urine tests capture a short window of recent substance use, often limited to the past few days. In contrast, hair tests provide an expansive insight by capturing drug use up to 90 days prior. This significant detection span helps employers make informed decisions about applicants or employees, reducing the risk of drug-related workplace incidents.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing offers an unparalleled extended detection window, accurately identifying drug use up to 90 days prior in Temperance, MI. This feature provides employers with a comprehensive view of an individual’s substance history, crucial for making informed hiring or retention decisions.

This extended detection period is particularly beneficial for organizations needing a clear insight into an individual's long-term substance use, offering peace of mind and enhancing the safety and productivity of the workplace. Hair follicle tests reveal patterns of behavior that short-term tests might miss.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Temperance, MI, hair follicle tests are known for their tamper-resistant properties, significantly reducing the chances of sample adulteration. This method ensures that the collected samples remain uncontaminated, providing trustworthy results that employers can rely upon for accurate assessments.

Unlike urine tests, which are susceptible to dilution or substitution, hair tests offer a robust testing method that is observed and tightly monitored, ensuring the authenticity and integrity of every sample. This helps maintain strict adherence to workplace drug-free policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
