Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Thomaston, Michigan. When requiring a hair test for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with numerous centers across the nation prepared to perform such tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly incorporated hair follicle analysis. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists demand hair tests rather than standard urine ones. This test is favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation. Its primary advantage is detecting drug use over approximately 90 days, using an observed collection, rendering it almost foolproof, though urine tests remain precise for recent usage within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective means to identify drug and alcohol usage. Hair encapsulates a prolonged history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer approximately a 3-month detection period for drugs and alcohol. It is straightforward to gather, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands, akin to a #2 pencil in size, closest to the scalp, is sufficient for obtaining 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or more than 10-panel tests, 150mg of the sample is suggested. We advise measuring the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers exclusively to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test involves four essential steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial sample processing into the lab’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary review for potential drug abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective method for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally valid. Any samples with positive presumptive results in Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample tests positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a remarkably low concentration, unlike in other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging to perform.

Confirmation of any positive screen result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection duration.
  • High integrity: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Historical insight: It can offer a timeline of drug usage over an extended period, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand itself and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
