In Tower, Michigan, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. This facility excels in hair testing for drugs and alcohol, with access to centers in all cities across the nation. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required for testing. These hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and offer additional customized testing possibilities.

The preference for hair follicle drug testing has grown significantly in recent years. Employers, courts, and specialists in Substance Abuse are increasingly opting for hair drug tests instead of traditional urine tests. These tests are ideal for workplaces with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and those on probation due to their extended detection capabilities—up to 90 days—and reduced likelihood of being tampered with. However, for detecting very recent drug use, within the last 5 days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair captures long-term indicators of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair offers a detection span of up to about 90 days for identifying alcohol and drug consumption. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

An optimal 1.5-inch segment containing roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the preferred amount for initial screening and detailed confirmation. For EtG, additional checks, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the hair sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. By head hair, we mean scalp-specific hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing laboratory workflow consists of four pivotal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory framework. This involves confirming the sample's sealing and proper shipment, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing supplementary data entry if not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial rapid assessment for illicit drugs. Although Screening is an economical method for negating drug usage across most samples, any positive indication requires verification to be court-admissible. Samples showing potentially positive results at the Screening stage must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows potential positivity in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are retrieved from the hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening as a methodology.

Verification of any Screening positives occurs using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples showing potential positivity are washed before confirmation if needed. The whole lab procedure, spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can recognize drug activity for up to 90 days, unlike urine assessments that cover a shorter duration.
  • Minimal risk of falsification: Altering hair drug test results is extremely tough, thereby enhancing accuracy.
  • Historical insights: It identifies a sequence of drug usage over time, not just fresh activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent activity: Drugs become traceable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expensive: Hair drug analysis often incurs higher costs than other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair pigmentation and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration within hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Tower, MI, hair follicle testing outshines traditional urine tests with its superior detection accuracy.
Urine tests can sometimes miss long-term drug use, whereas hair testing provides a more comprehensive insight into a person's history.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
