Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Trout Lake, Michigan. When you require a hair or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analyses, providing facilities nationwide that administer these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Hair assays can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other analyses.

Recently, hair follicle drug assessments have become more prevalent in substance screenings. Many companies, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists favor hair tests over traditional urine analyses. This method is preferred by employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies and the courts. The main advantage of using hair tests lies in their long detection span of up to 90 days, collected through a monitored process, making them hard to tamper with. However, for detecting drug use in the last 5 days, urine tests are most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective approach for identifying the use of substances like drugs and alcohol. Hair retains a comprehensive record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair strand fibers. When sampled near the scalp, it can reveal substance usage for up to around three months. The collection of hair is straightforward, not easily altered, and conveniently shipped.

A typical sample of 1.5 inches, roughly 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and confirmation purposes. For tests involving EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It’s advisable to use a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen weight. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. When head hair is mentioned, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses other hair types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The primary phases in the lab analysis of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning signifies the first step where a sample gets processed into the lab system. This stage includes checking the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry omitted by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary inspection for drug abuse. Screening is cost-efficient for eliminating drug use for most samples, yet a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in court. Samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening need secondary confirmation.

In the event of a presumptive positive result at the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. Drugs are then extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (for instance, urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening a challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive result from Screening is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if required. From Accessioning through Confirmation, the whole lab procedure is subject to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, thus providing more precise results.
  • Reveals historical data: It can indicate a continuous usage pattern rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is performed on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
