In Turner, Michigan, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. If a drug or alcohol evaluation is needed, our specialty in hair testing covers centers across cities nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair may be necessary. Analyzing these samples can check for substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing needs.

The hair follicle method in drug assessments has become more common in recent times. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are favoring this over traditional urine testing. This method suits employers with strict drug-free workplace standards, courts, and those under probation. Its primary advantage lies in detecting drug use over an extended period, usually around 90 days, conducted under supervision, and is hard to falsify. However, for recent usage (about 5 days), urine testing remains precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow. When collected near the scalp, hair offers an approximate 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, tampering with the sample is relatively challenging, and shipping is hassle-free.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly the dimension of a #2 pencil) taken closest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, a similar quantity of body hair can be utilized. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab's system. This process encompasses confirming that the sample was securely sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any necessary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial assessment for drugs of misuse. Although Screening is an affordable method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples with preliminary positive results from Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample exhibit presumptive positivity during the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are separated from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging approach to execute.

Confirmation for any positive Screening result is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as required. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to tamper with: Altering a hair drug test is highly difficult, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Historical insight: This method furnishes a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence metabolite concentrations in the hair.

Note: Though frequently termed "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Turner, MI, hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. One major benefit is its superior detection accuracy and reliability. While urine tests may detect recent drug use, hair follicle testing gives a broader picture, covering up to three months of substance history.

The reliability of hair testing outshines urine tests, making it a preferable choice for employers. Unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection window, hair tests provide extensive insights, ensuring no recent substance use is missed.

Extended Detection Window

With hair follicle testing, detection in Turner, MI spans up to 90 days, offering a detailed view of an individual's substance history. This extended window is crucial for employers seeking comprehensive data on employee or applicant behavior.

The longer detection period of hair follicle tests assures that drug usage within three months can be identified, compared to urine tests which only provide a short-term outlook. Thus, employers gain a more accurate understanding of past behaviors leading to informed decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Turner, MI offers a formidable barrier against tampering. This method dramatically reduces the likelihood of sample adulteration, providing results that are both reliable and undeniable.

Unlike urine tests, which can be subject to manipulation, the hair testing approach ensures the sample remains unaltered. This inherent resistance to tampering assures key stakeholders of its integrity, making it a top choice for accurate and trustworthy assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
