Located in Tustin, Michigan, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol screening, we provide specialized hair testing with centers available across all cities Nationwide. In most cases, hair lengths from 1.5 to 2 inches, whether from the crown or body, are required. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and provide custom testing options.

The usage of hair follicle drug tests has risen recently. These tests are becoming the preferred method by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over traditional urine examinations. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, along with courts and probation-enforced individuals, find hair tests advantageous due to their longer detection duration of approximately 90 days. Conducted under observation, these tests are virtually tamper-proof, although urine tests remain ideal for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a significant means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can provide a detection period of up to approximately three months for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, with limited risk of tampering, and is simple to transport.

Gathering a sample of 1.5 inches, composed of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, results in 100mg of hair—ideal for both screening and confirmation. For tests such as EtG, additional panels, or those exceeding 10 panels, a sample weighing 150mg is suggested. We advise using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not present, a similar quantity of body hair can be taken. When mentioning head hair, it refers solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results consists of four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning incorporates the initial processing of a sample into the laboratory's system. This procedure includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and delivered, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), as well as performing any additional data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While it's a cost-effective method to exclude drug usage for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for it to be admissible in legal settings. Any samples that are presumptively positive during Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample test positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are withdrawn from hair at a considerably lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed according to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, compared to shorter periods with urine tests.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are notably challenging to cheat, which enhances the precision of results.
  • Longitudinal data provision: Can illustrate a pattern of drug usage over time, as opposed to recent usage only.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It generally takes between 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: The concentration of drug metabolites in hair may be influenced by hair color and individual growth variations.

Note: Though colloquially termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis pertains to the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Tustin, MI, hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over urine testing. While traditional urine tests deliver indirect and temporary insights, hair testing provides a comprehensive look into long-term substance use. Detecting drugs over an extended period, hair tests are valued for their superior accuracy and reliability, making them an optimal choice for effective screening strategies.

Employers benefit from the detailed detection accuracy of hair testing, enabling them to enforce rigorous workplace policies without compromise. Unlike urine tests, which are more vulnerable to deceit, hair follicle examinations provide clarity and confidence in the results.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Tustin, MI, unveils a longer detection window that highlights its substantial benefits. By capturing a comprehensive history of drug use over the past 90 days, hair testing delivers deeper insights into substance dependencies than other studies. Employers can review an individual’s substance history, ensuring informed decisions regarding candidates and staff members.

This extensive detection timeframe is invaluable for maintaining workplace integrity. Decisions based on hair follicle testing empower organizations to cultivate a responsible workforce, fostering an environment where safety is paramount and rules are stringently upheld.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests excel in Tustin, MI, as a tamper-resistant method that curtails the risks of sample adulteration. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
