Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle substance testing services in Vermontville, Michigan. Whether it's for a hair-based drug or alcohol analysis, our specialty in hair testing ensures that all our nationwide centers, including Vermontville, can conduct these tests efficiently. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body, our hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

In the past few years, the prevalence of hair follicle drug tests has surged in drug testing methods. Many employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair testing instead of traditional urine tests. Employers who enforce strict no-drug policies, judicial systems, and probationers benefit from hair follicle tests' longer detection window, which can trace substance use up to 90 days. This is through a monitored collection process, making cheating nearly impossible. However, when detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of drug and alcohol use by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When collected close to the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to three months for drugs and alcohol. The collection process is straightforward, making it hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample containing roughly 200 strands of hair (comparable to a #2 pencil size) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is preferable. We advise weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the case that scalp hair is missing, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. Head hair explicitly refers to scalp hair, while body hair pertains to other types (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four fundamental stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory’s database. This process includes confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any supplementary data not recorded by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be legally admissible in court. Any samples that are preliminary positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is preliminarily positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this stage, the drugs are retrieved from hair at a significantly lower concentration than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies to execute.

All positive screening results are verified using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptively positive samples are cleaned prior to confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is very difficult, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Provides usage trends: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just indicating recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why do hair follicle tests excel over traditional urine tests in Vermontville, MI? The benefits are clear: hair testing offers an extended detection window, capturing a longer history of substance use. Compared to urine tests, which have a short detection period, hair tests' accuracy and dependability make them a preferred choice, giving a more comprehensive insight into an individual’s drug history.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Vermontville, MI, allows for a detection span of up to 90 days, greatly outperforming the typical urine test. This expansive window offers employers insight into an individual's reliability by evaluating sustained substance use. Understanding a candidate's historical behavior is crucial, and hair testing provides that thorough view.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle drug tests in Vermontville, MI, offer a tamper-resistant solution, significantly decreasing the chances of sample adulteration common in other methods. This testing ensures integrity throughout the process, leading to results that are both dependable and unquestionable, enhancing trust in the outcomes provided to employers.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
