Situated in the Village of Grosse Pointe Shores, MI, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services. Whether it's a drug or alcohol screening, we specialize in hair testing across numerous Nationwide centers. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown hair is required, though body hair might suffice, and tests can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other options.

Hair follicle drug testing has surged in popularity, becoming the preferred choice over traditional urine-based tests. Embraced by employers with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and probation officers, hair testing offers benefits such as a 90-day detection window, supervised collection processes, and prevents tampering. For recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an influential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the advancing hair strand. Proximal collection to the scalp allows hair to reveal up to a roughly 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for analysis and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. When specifying head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair pertains to all other hair classifications (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key stages in the laboratory evaluation of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory's process. This means ensuring the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, attributing a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing additional data entry not covered by an electronic custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid appraisal for drugs of concern. While Screening offers an efficient means to dismiss drug presence in most samples, a positive screen mandates confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require subsequent verification.

If a sample is presumptively positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug Screening the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screen is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positivity are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes inspection under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug consumption up to 90 days, whereas urine tests possess a limited detection timeframe.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is notably arduous, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: Demonstrates a pattern of drug use over time, not merely current usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs require about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variables can impact the drug metabolites' concentration in hair.

Note: While often termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
