Accredited Drug Testing offers full-spectrum hair follicle drug examinations in Walkerville, Michigan. If a hair drug or alcohol screening is needed, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in this and operates facilities in all cities nationwide that can execute such tests. Typically, a length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head or body is necessary. Hair screenings can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing configurations.

In recent developments, drug testing often incorporates hair follicle analyses more than before. Numerous employers, legal systems, and substance misuse experts now prefer hair testing over standard urine assays. These tests are favored by organizations enforcing strict anti-drug policies, legal entities, and probationers. The key advantage of hair-based testing is its extended detection timeline, reaching up to 90 days, executed under direct supervision, making it virtually tamper-proof. Nevertheless, for detecting drug use within 5 days, urinalysis remains most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair screening is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, it provides nearly a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, making it hard to tamper with and easy to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment from about 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg—ideal for both screening and confirming tests. For EtG and extended tests beyond 10 panels, it's recommended to use 150mg. We suggest measuring the sample on a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair, while body hair includes other types like facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

There are four primary phases in processing a drug test result in the lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, samples are initially processed into the laboratory's system, ensuring they were sealed and shipped accurately, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid check for drugs. While it's a cost-efficient method to rule out drug intake for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to stand in court. Any samples that test positive in Screening need a secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity during Screening, more hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. Drugs at this stage are extracted at a lower concentration than in other methods like urine or oral fluid, which makes hair drug testing the most challenging method to perform.

Confirmation of a positive Screening is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, making the results highly reliable.
  • Shows usage patterns: It reveals a historical pattern of drug consumption, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although sometimes called "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis is done on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
