Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle tests for drugs in Wolverine, Michigan. When you need hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair analysis is unmatched, with testing hubs in cities across the nation ready for service. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used. Our testing encompasses drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored analyses.

In recent times, drug testing has increasingly leaned towards hair follicle analysis. A growing number of employers, judicial systems, and addiction specialists now prefer this to the standard urine test. This is primarily because hair follicle tests align with zero-tolerance drug policies and are favored by courts and probation departments. The main advantage is the extended 90-day detection window, which, coupled with observation, makes cheating almost impossible. Nevertheless, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests hold better accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a strong method for uncovering the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair retains a prolonged history of alcohol and other substances by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When cut near the scalp, hair offers up to an approximately 3-month detection timeline for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to alter, and straightforward to send.

A 1.5-inch segment containing about 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp gives 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest weighing the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be taken. Reference to head hair pertains solely to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four key phases in the laboratory handling of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample within a lab's framework. This covers verifying the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial rapid check for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to rule out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in court. Any samples that are tentatively positive in Screening require a further confirmation step.

If a sample is tentatively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All tentative positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Challenging to evade: Cheating a hair drug test is very difficult, leading to more genuine results.
  • Offers historic data: It can illustrate a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot reveal recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in Wolverine, MI

Employers in Wolverine, MI, often weigh the merits of hair versus urine drug tests. A key advantage of hair tests lies in their superior detection capability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
