In Woodland, Michigan, Accredited Drug Testing provides full-spectrum hair follicle drug testing. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, we specialize in hair analysis, and our centers are available in every city nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. These tests can examine substances such as drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to other specific hair testing needs.

Recently, there's been an increased preference for hair follicle drug tests in substance use screening. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair testing over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle analysis is prevalent among employers with rigid drug policies, legal entities, and individuals under supervision. Its main advantage is a prolonged detection period for drug use—up to 90 days—collected under observation, making it nearly tamper-proof. However, for detecting recent drug use within a 5-day timeframe, urine tests remain unparalleled.

What it is, How it works

Accredited Drug Testing

Hair testing has gained recognition as an effective measure for tracing drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of substance use by encapsulating markers within the fibers of the growing strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can deliver up to a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drugs. Collection is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipping is convenient.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for accurate weighing. If scalp hair is inaccessible, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample within a lab's system. This step involves confirming the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplementary data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is an initial swift check for drug presence. While Screening is economical for eliminating drug usage in most samples, a positive result necessitates confirmation for legal acceptability. Any samples with presumptive positives in Screening require subsequent validation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Preparation. This stage extracts drugs at a significantly lower concentration from hair compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug testing the most intricate method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed in accordance with CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a limited detection period.
  • Fraud resistance: Manipulating hair drug tests is extremely difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Historical insight: These tests offer a usage pattern over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to determine recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the hair follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
