Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug examination services in Alberta, Minnesota. Should you require hair analyses for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, and we offer locations across the nation for your testing needs. A 1.5 to 2-inch hair sample from your head or body is generally required. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored to your needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become an increasingly popular method for drug screening. Employers, the legal system, and substance abuse specialists prefer hair testing over urine tests. Entities with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation offices often choose hair tests for their extensive detection window of up to 90 days and resistance to manipulation, although urine tests remain the most reliable for recent usage, within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding indicators in the strands of developing hair. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (roughly pencil-sized) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for testing and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It's best to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair may be gathered. When discussing head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair covers all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for producing a drug test outcome includes four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary incorporation of a sample into a lab’s database. This step includes ensuring the proper sealing and shipment of the sample, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry missing from an electronic custody chain system.

Screening involves a rapid initial analysis for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method for negating drug usage in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legal in court. Any samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening require secondary verification.

If a sample is preliminarily positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are removed from hair at a much lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed to be positive are cleaned before confirmation as needed. The end-to-end laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests feature a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It presents a drug use pattern over time, not solely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Lack of recent use detection: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than other test methods.
  • Inconsistent results: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth rates can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the hair follicle below the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Alberta, MN, hair follicle testing stands out against the traditional urine tests, exhibiting superior detection capabilities. Hair tests unveil a detailed timeline of substance use, often imperceptible to urine testing. Unlike urine tests, hair analysis drastically reduces chances of tampering and lengthens the detection window, aiding companies in establishing drug-free policies.

Hair follicle testing captures drug use over extended periods unlike urine tests. It showcases drug histories meticulously, offering a reliable depiction of an individual's substance use record, thereby enhancing trustworthiness over urine testing that captures recent usage only.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle drug tests in Alberta, MN, provide the advantage of an extended detection window. This technique traces substances used up to 90 days prior, revealing a more comprehensive view of an individual's drug usage history. Employers can thus assess potential hires or current employees with nuanced insight into their past habits.

This extended window is an asset for employers aiming to maintain a consistent workplace safety standard. By understanding an individual's usage history over months, rather than days, organizations conceal less and gain a more in-depth perspective on substance habits.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Alberta, MN, presents a near tamper-resistant method for drug screening. This robust test curtails the likelihood of sample manipulation, resulting in results employers can trust implicitly. Tampering is a notable concern for traditional testing methods like urine tests, which hair testing virtually eliminates.

Companies seeking dependable drug-testing solutions now more than ever turn to hair follicle methods. Its resiliency against adulteration guarantees that results are not only accurate but also indisputable, enhancing reliability and company confidence in these outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
