Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Alden, Minnesota. For those needing a hair-based drug or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair testing with testing centers available in all cities Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be used. Tests can be customized for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other unique requirements.

The inclination towards using hair follicle drug tests has surged in recent years. Many employers, the court system, and substance abuse experts prefer hair testing over the traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies and courts often mandate a hair test. The significant advantage is its longer detection window for drug use, tracing back up to 90 days, conducted under supervision, which renders it difficult to manipulate. Nonetheless, when assessing drug use within a five-day window, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an influential method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they develop. When taken from near the scalp, hair specimens can offer an approximate 3-month detection period for substances like alcohol and drugs. It's straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (resembling the thickness of a #2 pencil) situated closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the preferred amount for evaluation and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests that exceed 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to use a jeweler's scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair can't be sourced, a similar volume of body hair can be utilized. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair pertains to any other type of hair (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into the laboratory's system. This step verifies correct sealing and shipment of the sample, assigns an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any further data input not managed by an electronic custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary rapid evaluation for substance misuse. While Screening is an economical way to eliminate drug use in most samples, any positive screen result must be verified for legal admissibility. Samples that show a preliminary positive result in Screening need additional confirmation.

If a specimen gives a presumptive positive result during Screening, more hair is taken from the original sample and set for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than those in other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples with a preliminary positive result are cleaned before confirmation, based on necessity. Each step from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specifications and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to falsify results: It is extremely challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thus leading to more credible results.
  • Offers past usage data: This test can illustrate a trend of drug usage over time, not solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent use: Drugs generally become evident in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence the concentration of drug breakdown products in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests," this test examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
