Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Almelund, Minnesota. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with facilities across all cities nationwide. At least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffice for most cases. Hair testing can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing preferences.

Recently, hair follicle testing has grown in popularity for drug screening purposes. More employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over typical urine tests. Hair follicle testing suits employers with stringent no-drug policies, the judiciary, and those on probation. A key advantage is its longer detection period, which can last up to 90 days. Sample collection is observed, making the test difficult to cheat. Nevertheless, when assessing drug use in the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair can yield a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. It is straightforward to collect, somewhat hard to alter, and convenient to ship.

Collecting a sample of 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. It's recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When discussing head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair classifications (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result encompasses four critical steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This process verifies the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not included by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an elementary assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is economical for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be legally acceptable. Any samples that show presumed positivity during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample exhibit presumed positivity in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are separated from hair at notably lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted per the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and compliance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug testing identifies drug use for up to 90 days, compared to the shorter range of urine tests.
  • Low likelihood of deception: Hair drug testing is hard to circumvent, enhancing the precision of the results.
  • Chronological usage data: It reveals a pattern of drug consumption over time, not limited to recent usage.

Limitations:

  • No recent use detection: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests are costlier than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is often used, but the test actually analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Almelund, MN, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine testing due to its superior detection accuracy and reliability. Hair tests can identify substance use over an extended period, unlike urine tests, which often miss longer-term usage. This makes it a preferred choice for employers and legal bodies seeking precise results.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Almelund, MN, is instrumental in assessing an individual's drug history. The ability to trace substance use up to 90 days offers employers a thorough insight into an applicant's or employee's substance usage profile, aiding informed decision-making.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
