Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Ashby, Minnesota. If you require a hair analysis for drugs or alcohol, we specialize in this method, and our testing centers are available in all cities nationwide to conduct these tests. A hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body is generally sufficient. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be customized for specific testing needs.

In recent years, the approach to performing drug tests has increasingly incorporated hair follicle analysis. Many companies, courts, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair testing over traditional urine analysis. This method is favored by employers with strict drug policies, judicial systems, and probation clients. A key advantage of hair follicle analysis lies in its extended detection period, generally up to 90 days, collected in a secure process, and difficult to falsify. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now considered an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's fibers as it grows. A sample collected near the scalp can indicate drug and alcohol exposure for up to around three months. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and simple to convey.

A 1.5-inch hair segment consisting of roughly 200 strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is optimal for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or panels surpassing 10, 150mg of hair is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is suggested. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. Reference to head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair. Body hair includes any other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug test analysis involves Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with the sample's introduction into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample was secured and transported correctly, assigns a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and fills in missing data that an electronic chain of custody system might not provide.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drug traces. While Screening is an economical means to potentially exclude drug usage from numerous samples, any positive screenings must be authenticated before they are legally binding. Samples that test presumptive-positive during Screening will proceed to confirmation.

If Screening results are presumptive-positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During extraction, drug traces are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other practices, such as urine or oral fluid testing, making hair drug screening one of the most challenging procedures.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques are used to affirm any positive screenings. All presumptive-positive samples undergo cleansing as needed before confirmation. Review of the entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation takes place under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair categorization and ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Approximately 90-day detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use over a maximal span of 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a narrower window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is particularly challenging, which enhances the accuracy of results.
  • Historical usage insight: It allows for tracking patterns of drug usage over time instead of just recent exposure.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent usage detection: Drugs become noticeable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more compared to other drug testing approaches.
  • Variability in results: Differences in hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence the level of drug metabolites detected in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Ashby, MN, hair follicle testing is preferred over traditional urine testing due to its enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, which are limited in scope, hair follicle tests offer a more comprehensive view of an individual's substance use history. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
