In Baker, Minnesota, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug tests. Specializing in these tests, we provide services across many cities nationwide, including drug and alcohol tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Our tests are capable of detecting drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other tailored analyses.

Hair follicle drug tests have increasingly become a preferred method for drug testing. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts often choose this method over urine tests. Such tests are favored by employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies and courts monitoring probation. Their main advantage is a longer drug detection period, up to 90 days, with a monitored collection process making cheating nearly impossible. However, urine tests remain more effective for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and other drugs by capturing biomarkers within the hair fiber as it grows. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can reveal up to a 3-month detection window for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, fairly resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in width to a #2 pencil) near the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. Using a jeweler's scale, we recommend weighing the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial processing of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step includes verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary quick check for abused drugs. While Screening is a cost-effective approach to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to become admissible in legal proceedings. Positive results in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a diminished concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positives undergo washing as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is analyzed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Historical data provision: It highlights drug use patterns over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in results: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth variations may influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: The test often called a "hair follicle test" actually analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair testing in Baker, MN demonstrates multiple advantages over traditional urine tests. High detection accuracy and prolonged substance history recognition stand out as key benefits. Unlike urine tests, hair analysis provides a comprehensive assessment period of up to 90 days, making it harder to circumvent, and offering a clearer picture of drug usage.
While urine tests are impacted by short detection timelines, hair testing provides a more comprehensive view over a longer period, which can be crucial for employers enforcing drug-free workplaces.

Extended Detection Window

Baker, MN employers benefit from hair follicle testing due to its extended detection window covering up to 90 days.

This allows employers a broader assessment of a candidate’s drug history, offering a clearer understanding for informed decision-making. Traditional tests may miss longer-term substance use, but hair testing provides unwavering insights, supporting a safer and more drug-free workplace environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
