Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Bayport, Minnesota. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities in all major cities nationally capable of conducting these tests. Generally, you'll need about 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown or body for the analysis, which can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized solutions.

Lately, hair follicle drug tests have become more prominent in detecting substance use over standard urine analyses. Employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair tests instead. These tests, favored by entities with strict anti-drug policies, provide benefits like an extended 90-day detection window, observed sample collection, and resistance to cheating. However, urine tests remain superior for recent drug use within a 5-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair, hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and drugs. Proximal hair to the scalp can indicate usage detailed for up to about 3 months. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample comprising about 200 strands (akin to a #2 pencil in size) cut nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments above 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is recommended. Use a jeweler’s scale for weighing specimens. If scalp hair is unattainable, an equivalent portion of body hair may be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we specify scalp hair only. Body hair pertains to all other types (including facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of a drug test result entails four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any remaining data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary swift check for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is an economical method to dismiss drug use for most samples, a positive screen demands confirmation to be legally admissible. All samples believed to be positive during Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a presumptive positive outcome during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), which renders hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as required. The lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is subjected to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests discern drug usage for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Cheating is challenging: Manipulating a hair drug test is notably tough, thus resulting in more trustworthy outcomes.
  • Historical usage pattern: It can illustrate a drug use pattern over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Limits on immediate detection: Drugs become detectable in hair around 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to alternative testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration.

Note: What’s often termed as "hair follicle tests" actually evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
