Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Beaver Creek, Minnesota. For those requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, we are experts in the field and have centers in all cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the crown of the head or body. Hair tests can be tailored for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become more commonplace in testing methodologies. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse specialists prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by zero-tolerance policy employers, legal systems, and probation officers due to their longer detection window, observed collection, and resistance to adulteration. However, for detecting recent drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as an effective means for uncovering alcohol and drug use habits. Hair retains a lengthy timeline of drug and alcohol markers by embedding them within the strands as they grow. When sampled near the scalp, it can indicate drug and alcohol use for up to roughly 90 days. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A segment of 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If head hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers specifically to hair from the scalp, while "body hair" encompasses all other types of hair (like facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The primary stages involved in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial intake of a sample within a laboratory's system. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and transported, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and addresses any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers an expedited evaluation for substances of abuse. Though Screening affords a cost-effective strategy to dismiss drug usage in most cases, any positive findings necessitate validation for court admissibility. Samples that show positive results in Screening mandatorily require an additional confirmation process.

If a sample indicates a preliminary positive in the Screening phase, further hair is taken from the initial sample for the Extraction process. At this point, substances are isolated from the hair at significantly lower concentrations than in methods like urine or oral fluid analysis, highlighting why hair drug testing is notably rigorous.

Confirmation of any positive outcome from Screening occurs through methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every sample that tests presumptively positive is cleansed before confirmation when necessary. The entire lab procedure—from Accessioning to Confirmation—is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines along with accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage up to 90 days prior, in contrast to urine tests which offer a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Difficult to deceive: Hair drug tests are notably hard to falsify, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Chronological data provision: Hair testing shows a progressive pattern of drug use over time instead of just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying immediate use: It typically takes about 5-7 days before drugs become traceable in hair samples.
  • Cost factor: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly compared to other testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual rates of hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests," these assessments actually evaluate the hair strands, not the follicles beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
