Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Belview, Minnesota. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, we specialize in hair testing and offer testing centers across all cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown of your head or body can be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing solutions.

In recent years, the use of hair follicle drug tests has grown in popularity for drug testing purposes. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are more frequently opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, court systems, and individuals under probation. The key advantage of hair follicle testing is its extended drug detection window of up to 90 days, which is collected via a monitored process, making it nearly impossible to tamper with. However, for detecting drug use within the past five days, urine tests still provide the most precise results.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the hair's growing strand fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to around three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) from the nearest part of the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample size of 150mg is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the sample with a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be harvested. References to head hair pertain strictly to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test outcome involves four principal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's system. This phase encompasses verification that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial expeditious drug abuse check. Though Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive screen must be confirmed for court acceptance. Samples identified as presumptively positive during Screening require a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction preparation. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a substantially lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a challenging methodology.

Confirmation for any positive Screening result is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation as needed, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed. The entire lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is overseen under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug testing can trace drug use for up to 90 days, compared to the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Offers chronological data: It can disclose a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth variance can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
