Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Bigelow, Minnesota. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is proficient in hair testing, with testing sites in every city nationwide capable of performing a hair assessment. You should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head, or body hair might be used typically. Hair assessments can be examined for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

In recent times, the approach for drug assessments has shifted more towards utilizing a hair follicle drug assessment. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer a hair drug test over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug use policies, courts, and individuals on probation. A key advantage of a hair follicle drug test is its extended detection window for drug usage, ordinarily up to 90 days, collected through a witnessed collection process, making it nearly tamper-proof. However, a urine test remains the most precise for detecting drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a significant approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It serves as a long-standing record for alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the fabric of the hair as it grows. When clipped near the scalp, a hair sample can reveal usage of alcohol and drugs for a period of up to around three months. The collection of hair is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and containing roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for analysis and verification. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. Using a jeweler's scale for measuring the sample is suggested. If head hair isn't accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. Mention of head hair implies specifically scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four principal phases in the lab processing of a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial handling of a sample within a lab's protocol. This step includes ensuring that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any required information not documented by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical procedure for excluding drug usage in most samples, a positive result from screening necessitates verification to be considered valid in legal proceedings. Samples that are likely positive in Screening need a second confirmation.

If a sample appears positive during Screening, extra hair is extracted from the primary sample and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, medications are extracted from hair at much smaller concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of any screening positive result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that appear positive are cleaned before confirmation as deemed necessary. The whole laboratory method from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and the adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 guidelines.

Benefits of hair drug screening:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a narrower detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is very challenging, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It can illustrate a trend of drug intake over a duration, not just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are generally costlier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistencies in results: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug markers in hair.

Note: Often termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
