Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Bird Island, Minnesota. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our expertise is in hair analysis, with facilities available across all cities nationwide capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is needed for analysis. Hair examinations can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing needs.

In recent times, drug testing methods have inclined towards hair follicle analysis. Many employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse professionals opt for hair testing over generic urine assessments. Hair follicle analyses are favored by organizations with zero-tolerance policies on drug use, legal institutions, and individuals under probation. The main advantage lies in its prolonged detection span of up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making tampering nearly impossible. Meanwhile, urine tests remain the most reliable for recent usage within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has gained recognition as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records long-term substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection time frame of up to about 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to ship.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair is missing, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. References to head hair solely pertain to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary incorporation of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step includes confirming the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data input absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: Offers a representation of drug use patterns over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Hair color and individual growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests", the test assesses the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Bird Island, MN, hair follicle testing is proving superior to traditional urine tests. One of its key benefits is enhanced detection accuracy, offering a comprehensive overview of substance use over a longer period. Hair tests are less susceptible to manipulation, ensuring reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
